FAQ

WHAT IS EPIC?

  • EPIC is a public health initiative funded by the State of Arizona and the National Institute of Health (NIH), and performed by The University of Arizona, to improve the quality of patient care for traumatic brain injury.

WHAT DOES EPIC STAND FOR?

  • Excellence in Prehospital Injury Care

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO US?Phoenix Rescue in action

  • We will be able to provide state of the art traumatic brain injury training.
  • We will be able to pull reports that show their individual TBI volume, compliance with EPIC, and eventually patient outcomes.
  • This is intended to help future TBI victims more than any other hospital interventions currently available.
  • You and your agency will be part of this unprecedented effort to save lives. Without your participation we will be unable to complete the public health project.

WHAT ABOUT HIPAA?

  • This is a HIPAA exempt project. Standard HIPAA procedures do not apply. However, all of our staff has been HIPAA trained, and will treat the material with great caution. We can provide full documentation for verification of the HIPAA exemption.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE INFORMATION AFTER YOU ARE FINISHED?

  • After the information needed for the project is entered into the EPIC database, it will be destroyed.

WHEN IS THE TRAINING PHASE SCHEDULED TO BEGIN?

  • The Training Phase is in currently in year 2. We have reached approximately 70(+)% percent of Arizona EMS Agencies, and are working very hard to increase that number as close to 100% as possible. Once you have engaged in the data collection portion, we will be able to begin training. Please coordinate with our training team to arrange for you agencies participation.  Contact them using our 'Contact us' liink above or here.

HOW LONG IS THE “TRAIN THE TRAINER” SESSION?

  • Approximately 4 hours.  For every first time “Train the Trainer” session, We can provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at the end of the successfully completed sessions. At your request, we will provide these documents to you for you to fill out and submit appropriately.

ARE YOU WILLING TO TEACH THE “TRAIN THE TRAINER” SESSION OVER THE CONSECUTIVE DAYS TO COVER ALL 3/4 SHIFTS?Guardian Helicopter

  • Yes! We will do whatever we need to, to get this training out to all staff, and to have it done well.

HOW LONG IS THE FIELD PROVIDER TRAINING?

  • The Field Provider Training lasts approximately 1-2 hours

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS TO DELIVER THE TRAINING TO THE FIELD PROVIDERS, IN TERMS OF A TIME LINE?

  • Most importantly, we would like to minimize how long it takes from when the first provider is trained at the agency until the last one is trained.  However, we are aware that training schedules are often pre-set by agencies and we will be willing to work with you, for your convenience, and to optimize the experience for your team.

HOW LONG DO YOU ANTICIPATE THE DATA COLLECTION PHASE TO LAST?

  • Collection will last four years; through 12/31/2015.

ISN’T SOME OF THIS DATA AVAILABLE THROUGH THE STATE’S TRAUMA REGISTRY? IF SO, WOULDN’T THAT ELIMINATE SOME OF THE DATA COLLECTION REQUIRE INTERNALLY?

  • We have only the hospital data from the (ASTR) Arizona State Trauma Registry. However, only a small fraction of the time does it contain the EMS information we are seeking. The information listed on the  Patient Care Record (PCR), is the first half of the “puzzle”, while the information on the ASTR is the second half of the “puzzle”. When we are able to successfully align the events and outcomes, we are able to successfully determine EPIC Protocol.

WHAT IF WE HAVE ELECTRONIC RECORDS?

  • We can accept both paper and electronic documents. Electronic documents that save to a PDF format are preferred.

HOW CAN I GET ELECTRONIC RECORDS TO YOU?

  • The preferred method is for you to save the specific Patient Care Records to PDF format and either email or mail them to us on a flash drive or disk. Records can also be printed and sent through the mail to us. When this process is used the legibility of written information deteriorates, and thus is less preferred method. Please choose the method that best suits your needs.
